Our Certified Organic Farm
Organic FarmOrganic Farming

We have been certified organic since 2007 for vegetables, fruits, herbs, mushrooms and flowers by NOFA-NY Certified Organic, LLC. In 2009 we added chickens, eggs and pasture to our certified products.

Our most important practice is to build and enrich the soil. In the fall we cover our garden beds with maple leaves that we gather from the festival grounds. These protect the soil from erosion and are rototilled into the soil early in the spring. We also have piles of aged organic matter (garden & kitchen material, horse manure) that are added when they are fully decomposed. We use very little else to add nutrients, except Neptune's Harvest Fish and Seaweed fertilizer for certain crops. All are seeds are bought from certified organic suppliers or saved by us. We start some seeds indoors with approved potting medium under lights and then move them to the greenhouse before they go into the beds. Once the plants get established in the ground, we mulch with hay from our families fields which keeps moisture in the soil and weed seeds from sprouting. We do our best to keep the weeds and damaging insects under control. Insects aren't that much of a problem because we have wild areas nearby where beneficial insects and birds find food and protection. This is all part of creating a sustainable system where the soil, crops and surrounding environment are better off because we are here loving this place and taking care of it.
